Untitled (balloons)/Tom Loughlin

Every spring art schools around the Bay have final shows to highlight the work of the year’s graduating Masters of Fine Arts (in visual arts). If you live here, you know there are a LOT of Masters and a lot of art projects. In San Francisco alone there are shows for the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts and San Francisco State University, not to mention Mills across the Bay in Oakland and don’t forget Stanford and Berkeley.

This means a lot of work, a lot of artist statements and a whole lot of nervous grads entering a pretty competitive job market. KQED Pop had the chance to head to the Old Mint where SFAI’s final show, Currency, is being held from May 15 to 19. While the grads installed their work, we walked around and talked to some of them about why they make art and why we should care. Spoiler: we were impressed and we are hard to impress. Watch the video below and regain a bit of hope for the future of art in America.

The San Francisco Art Institute is proud to present CURRENCY, a showcase of provocative new work from nearly 100 emerging artists.

At a time in our society when many are reflecting upon national economic conditions, this exhibition at The Old Mint offers a unique opportunity for SFAI’s artists to juxtapose contemporary expression with a stunning National Historic Landmark that was central to the country’s economic development.

SFAI’s 2013 MFA graduates—working in painting, photography, printmaking, film, sculpture, installation, digital media, performance, and across media—will present work that embraces the Institute’s signature spirit of experimentation and conceptual risk-taking. The result of an intense period of collaboration, critical engagement, and artistic development, the work reflects both current dialogues in contemporary art and strong individual points of view. In addition, many artists have created site-specific pieces that respond to the history, character, and physical spaces of The Old Mint.

SFAI has been at the vanguard of contemporary art for more than 140 years. CURRENCY invites curators, collectors, critics, family, friends, and the general public to discover the next generation of pioneering artists from this celebrated institution.

“Body Rhetoric” is an exhibition dealing with the philosophical issues of the human form and the affect of the human body as a vehicle for narrative in the 21st century. Artists Lynn Colingham, Pabi and Chason Huggins explore and expose issues of bodily function, human anatomy, social and physical gestures, as well as constituents of morality, sexuality and pleasure through painting, video and performance. Both humorous and anxious, the works evoke a projection of personal interests, desires, investments and phobias from the viewer.

Root Division presents the MFA Now 2013 Slide Slam, featuring presentations by 12 current MFA candidates in seven Bay Area programs.

MFA Now began in 2012 in efforts to create dialogue and community between the Bay Area schools that are listed in a US News and World Report survey from 2012, as part of the top one hundred MFA Programs in Visual Arts in the country: California College of the Arts, Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley. This year’s presentation includes a comprehensive archive catalogue, juried exhibition, and slide slam.

The Slide Slam offers another opportunity for professional development in which emerging artists gain exposure and meet and interact with audiences. It also allows for the community to gain further insight into the work of up and coming local artists.

Zach Koch (US)
Joseba Eskubi (ES)
Frederik Næblerød
Pabi Chulo
Anders Bendixen
Kristian Touborg
m.fl.
